This whole “don’t physically discipline your kids” stuff is some NORTHERN WHITE LIBERAL NONSENSE
That’s why White children are disrespectful as FUCK.
That’s why White families are FOREVER asking Black & Brown women to be mammies and Black & Brown men to be mentors to their damn pickney.
Fuck no.
Even if you don’t physically discipline your child personally, GROW A FUCKING BACKBONE AND DISCIPLINE THEM SOME KINDA WAY.
YOUR CHILDREN ARE NOT YOUR “BEST FRIENDS”.
YOUR CHILDREN ARE NOT YOUR “EQUALS”.
YOUR CHILDREN AIN’T GONNA DIE IF YOU TELL THEM “NO”.
YOU ARE THE ADULT. THEY ARE THE CHILD. ACT ACCORDINGLY.
I THANK MY MOM & DAD FOR BEATIN’ MY LITTLE BLACK BUTT WHEN I SAID OR DID SOME OFF SHIT. ‘CAUSE IF I CARRIED MY BULLSHIT INTO ADULTHOOD, THEY KNEW THAT WHITE SOCIETY WAS GONNA DO WORSE TO ME.
Let me tell you the first time I encountered a white child interacting with white parents in real life. Keep in mind, I only thought white kids talked sideways to their parents on television for drama purposes. Also keep in mind that my parents are purebred Grade-A Nigerian and they will twist your lips if you so much as “Mscheeew” in their vicinity.
I was at my friend’s house, we’ll call him Jordan for now. We were playing N64 and shit, and his mom came in the room acting like a damn maid.
And the first offense is when he called his mother by his first name.
I was horrified. I thought he was going to get struck by lightning when he called his mother “Carol”. Like, real talk I didn’t know my mother’s real name until I was 6 or 7. She was always “mother”, “mom”, or “mommy” to me. This kid was calling his mom by her name like he was her husband and was asking for a beer or some shit. I was sure she was going to slap his lips off his face for the disrespect. You never call an elder by their name. You defer to them as the parental honorific or if they’re unrelated “auntie” or “uncle”. Always. This is LAW in Africa.
And you never send an elder to fetch anything for you. You fetch things for them. But he had his mom doing shit like she worked for him. I was appalled and partly intrigued.
Then they got into an argument and he called her a bitch. I was sure she was going to tear him limb from limb and burn the pieces and say something like “I’ll have to make a better child than you. You’re disrespectful.”
She cried and he sat there, smug as shit.
I told him I had to go home, and that’s precisely what I did.
When I relayed it to my mom she looked at me and that look said if I even so much as thought of testing out the white kid’s handling of a parent-child situation, she would DEAL WITH ME.
And damn near ALL of my white friends are like that. Lord, I get a chill thinking about it. My parents put the fear of God and the koboko in my soul. Till this day I won’t even roll my eyes at my mother or she’ll slap them out of my head. Even when I’m married, she will still have no qualms kicking my ass if need be.
Physical discipline is a necessity, but I think that’s only prevalent in African, Native, Caribbean, Asian, Middle Eastern, and Black American communities, and even nowadays, people are really buying that lackadaisical “don’t hit your children! It’s cruuuuuuel!” mentality. And that’s why each forthcoming generation is getting more and more reckless and disrespectful. They have never had to pull a switch off the tree when their parents pull over in the car to beat that ass.
They’ve never acted out in the store and got an ass whipping in the bathroom (or whatever aisle you cut up in). They have never had to go and fetch the belt. They don’t know that “hide a pillow in the pants” struggle, the pretend-to-be-asleep-so-you-don’t-get-beat struggle, the your-teacher-called-your-parents-so-it’s-on-when-you-get-home struggle, or the broken cooking spoon on the ass struggle. They don’t, and that’s why they are so goddamn RUDE.
I’m beating my kids. They are going to learn respect for their elders, related or not. To hell with that white nonsense.
I can definitely see both sides to it. But I am personally a West Indian child who was beat ONCE. That was the first and only time. My pinky started to bleed (this is one of my most vivid memories as a toddler to this day lol) and I think my daddy got as upset as I did and I was never hit again.
There are ways to teach children to be respectful without beating em. My parents were both beat but for some reason that didn’t get passed down to me and I know I won’t be beating my future children.
To me the problem with white kids isn’t that they’re not being whooped. It’s that there is a lack of respect in those cultures to begin with… calling your mum a bitch? I mean what is that? And I’ve heard that tons of times by white kids. I’ve never been seriously whooped but I’ve never called my parents out of their name (or by their first name for that matter) lol not because I’m scared of them but because that’s just hella disrespectful. And I’ve been taught by other means that the worst thing you can do as a child is 1) disappoint your parents and 2) disrespect them .. and that goes into adulthood.
I was taught to respect my parents on account of how much they’ve done for me. That’s one thing black kids are taught… to understand that everything they have is a result of the adults who took care of em. White kids not so much.
That’s why you have em putting their parents in homes and stuff… ya’ll are crazy. My parents will live with me until they pass away.
so… I think the ‘to beat or not to beat’ is a false dilemma… the real issue is instilling respect in your children.
It really drives me crazy to see that “black and brown people beat their kids” bullshit assumption. I was raised in a Latino household and my grandparents never laid a physical finger on me. I respect and love my grandparents very much, and it’s not because I was terrified of them as a kid. On the flip side- I lived in a trailer park filled with low income whites, around kids who were beaten daily and it did *nothing* to make them any more respectful- in fact in most cases it just escalated everything to ridiculously unhealthy levels. The idea that minorities physically discipline their kids and whites do not is poisonous.

I always think that in the particular case of hitting little kids is like you’re teaching them that people they love can...
